Why this matters
The humanitarian situation in the Great Lakes subregion, particularly in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania, is dire, with overlapping hazards and a significant funding gap for life-saving interventions. The 56% funding gap for UNICEF's Humanitarian Action for Children 2026 appeal severely limits the scale and sustainability of support for vulnerable populations, with approximately 1,300,000 children in need of humanitarian assistance. The presence of over 2.7 million refugees in the subregion, including nearly 2 million in Uganda, places immense pressure on already overstretched health, nutrition, and education systems. Faith-based organizations and Christian charities, many of which are ECFA-accredited and provide transparent financial reporting, can play a critical role in addressing these humanitarian needs, particularly in supporting refugee populations and providing emergency relief. As the situation continues to deteriorate, it is essential for these organizations to prioritize support for the most vulnerable populations, including children and refugees, and to advocate for increased funding to address the significant humanitarian needs in the region.
