Why this matters
The Middle East crisis is exacerbating Somalia's existing food security challenges, which have been compounded by successive shocks such as drought and flooding. With 90 percent of its cereals and 100 percent of its petroleum products imported, Somalia's reliance on sea routes and supply chains makes it particularly vulnerable to disruptions. The country's lack of domestic oil production and strategic reserves further amplifies its susceptibility to price increases and supply chain disruptions. As a result, the humanitarian food security response in Somalia is facing significant challenges, with the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan funded at only 12.2 percent of the required $852 million. The impact of the crisis on Somalia's food security is likely to be felt most acutely by the 6.49 million people already in IPC Phase 3 or above, who have limited coping capacity due to repeated crises.
