Communities that were already vulnerable have been severely impacted by a disaster. Many people have been affected, with over 1,000 reported dead and more than 4,000 missing. Rescue efforts have saved 10,451 people so far.

The disaster has also caused significant damage to infrastructure, including power stations. A preliminary estimate suggests a large amount of debris was swept through the area. Further details are available in a Rapid Assessment and Analysis report.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it is known that several power projects were damaged or forced to stop operating.
