Preliminary statistics for 2025 indicate a decrease in asylum applications. The total number of applications was around 16,500, compared to approximately 25,360 in 2024. Most of these applications were not new, with only 42 per cent being first-time submissions.

The remaining applications included children born to refugees and repeat filings. Afghans and Syrians were the largest groups of asylum-seekers. Support for refugees is being provided internationally, with certain countries contributing significantly to these efforts.

Further information on asylum applications and refugee support can be found in the UNHCR Austria Factsheet for February 2026.
